“For me, drawing was a reawakening after a lifetime of artistic curiosity and experimentation. The traditional progression tends to be from basic drawing skills to oil painting. My experience was the opposite in that I ended up rediscovering the simplicity, beauty and complexity of drawing. What really attracted me to it was a desire to have more control over my expression and the humble pencil became the perfect tool for me to achieve this.

I chose portraiture because of its challenging nature. The quest for a perfect likeness has become an obsession, not just because I’m a perfectionist at heart, but because I’ve found that the slightest error in portraying the unique characteristics of an individual renders the work simply ‘un-characteristic’ and therefore may disappoint the client.

Sharing my passion and enthusiasm for portrait drawing has become the most rewarding part of my entire working life. To see the transformation in my students’ work is a source of immense mutual pride. I teach classes in the United Arts Club on Saturday mornings and more recently at my studio in Foxrock during the week.”
